Good afternoon, everyone! I hope you are all enjoying these weekend days. For me, it's nice to be able to enjoy a cup of coffee while it is still hot. Sometimes I can't do that during the school day, but it's all part of the job! Here's a look at some school updates:
Math - I have been working with the kids on understanding what is going on when we divide. To help with this, I dressed up like a pirate on Wednesday. Hidden treasure (100s/10s/1s coins) were hidden throughout the room, and the class's job was to collect all the "booty". Then we brought all the treasure together. To get it back to our mainland, they had to divide the treasure amongst our 4 ships: SS View, The Creek, SS Point, and The High. We first distributed the hundreds coins, then the tens coins, and finally the ones coins. This connects really well with partial quotients, a video which you can find here. The kids worked on this method on Thursday and Friday, and the packet they brought home this weekend was to practice independently. On Monday, the kids will have a chance to finish that packet, but if they chose to finish it over the weekend, I will have extension activities available. During the rest of this week, the students will be able to explore the standard (traditional) algorithm. Literacy - Shared Reading - Last week, the kids focused on the historical fiction readers theater "Light", a story about a boy who becomes Thomas Edison's apprentice. We read the story together and analyzed the setting and theme of this story. This upcoming week, we will be reading folk tales, fables, and myths, analyzing the characters, settings, plots, and themes of each. Writing - The kids have been polishing their first opinion writing pieces of the year. They will be able to share them with the class this Thursday and Friday. Read Aloud - We have continued reading The Phantom Tollbooth in who class. The kids especially loved Office Short Shrift, who is literally AND figuratively short and shrifty in both character and appearance. Differentiated Groups - The kids have continued reading novels/short stories in their groups. Some groups are also practicing reading fluently. Science - This week marks the first group of lessons about energy. The kids will have a chance to light up a light bulb with a battery, wires, and bulbs, without the conventional hardware, and we will explore conductors and circuits. Social Studies - After learning all about the development of textile mills, we will be moving into the development of transportation this week. This will include steamboats, canals, highways, and railroads.
